The top 10 Coal Fired Power Plants in the World

Coal has a bad reputation for being a leading cause of pollution. While it is true that coal power plants emit many pollutants, many industrialised nations and developing nations rely on coal to power their electricity grids and supply consumers and industry with much-needed power.
Coal is a non-renewable and limited resource; however, it is not scarce and there are many deposits and active coal mines in use today. Because of its abundance, it has been a staple in electricity production for many regions; especially those lacking other resources such as sufficient hydro-electric capacity, or other hydrocarbons such as oils or natural gases.
China spans the crown in terms of overall coal-fired generation capacity and it should be no surprise that it features heavily on this list, though in terms of the largest coal-fired individual plants, the first (mainland) Chinese plant is found at position number 3.
Europe is a leading region for renewable energy production, however, before the push to cleaner technologies, much like most established economies, coal was the mainstay of electricity generation for this region. Even today, new coal fired power plants are being constructed; but at a far smaller scale than in coal’s heyday as a prime energy source.
Of the 10 plants on this list, however, only one is in Europe. All others are in Asia, which is seeing massive growth in energy consumption and the construction of large plants to keep up. Other than China, Taiwan, Indonesia and India feature on the list. Of these countries, Indonesia is one of the largest coal producers in the region, so it should be no surprise that it’s own natural resource is also firing its plants.
The top 10 Coal Power Plants in the world:
1. Taichung Power Plant, Taiwan
2. Bełchatów Power Station, Poland
3. Tuoketuo Power Station, China
4-7. Guodian Beilun Power Station, Waigaoqiao Power Station, Guohua Taishan Power Station, and Jiaxing Power Station; all in China
8. Paiton Power Station, Indonesia
9. Vindhyachal Thermal Power Station, India

10. Mundra Thermal Power Station, India
