Historical look at players in the Wind industry: Enel
Enel is Italy’s largest power company and
has a subisidiary, Enel Green Power, for renewable energy projects. It is an
integrated player which produces, distributes and sells electricity and gas.
Following the acquisition of the Spanish utility Endesa and commissioning of
new project, Enel had 2,654 MW of installed wind capacity at the end of 2010
due the commissioning of wind projects in Italy (103 MW), Portugal and Spain
(120 MW), Romania (64 MW), France (34 MW), Bulgaria (21 MW) and Greece (10 MW)
during the year. At the end of 2010, a 200 MW wind farm was under construction
in Oklahoma, 64 MW in France.
Wind power is predominantly in three
regions – Iberia and Latin America (1,378 MW), Italy (532 MW) and North America
(374 MW). The company also has an installed capacity in the rest of Europe (337
MW), including Romania (64 MW) and Bulgaria (42 MW).
In 2009, Enel Green Power entered a
strategic agreement to develop an 8,000 MW wind pipeline, half with
Minnesota-based Geronimo Wind Energy and the other half with California-based
Padoma Wind Power.
In January 2010, Enel Green Power acquired
a majority stake in Maicor Wind and Enerlive from McKelcey Funds. These
companies had a pipeline of 64 MW of wind projects at the time of acquisition,
of which 44 MW had started operations by the end of the year. This was followed
by the acquisition of a 60% stake in ECyR from Endesa and its name change to
Enel Green Power España in March.
Also in March 2010, Enel Green Power
acquired Hellas Power Generation and Supplies with its operational 6 MW wind
project. This was the first Greek acquisition of the year, which was followed
by equity investments in Wind Park Kouloukonas, 50% of Wind Park of Korinthia
and International Wind Parks of Kouloukonas with 33 MW of non-operation wind
projects at the end of the year
The company is still continuing to develop
projects in its core market, Italy. In February 2010 Enel Green Power acquired
Italgest Wind from Italgest Energia, including its four wind projects and 162
MW pipeline in Puglia for EUR 6 million plus bonuses, and Padoma Wind Power
from NRG Energy for EUR 35 million. Also in February, the company formed Enel
Green Power Calabrian to submit applications for wind projects in Bagaldi,
Motta San Giovanni and Montebello Jonico in Calabria.
